How I created a remotely controlled music player

This was a recent project of mine. I work in an office with several other people. Some of us have speakers, others don't, and they always grumble that they want some background music whilst we work. Radio doesn't work very well (poor signal), so someone with speakers ends up playing something they have. A poor solution I'm sure you'll all agree!

So I came up with an idea: Set up a server that we can all upload our music to and a web interface (or some other remote gui) that we can all use to control what music is played - like some sort of remote controlled ipod, just bigger!

Fun Installing VMware server in Hardy Heron

Well, we had fun this month with the SLES installation tutorials. We were part way through installing from last month, and intended to continue this month to a full installation. Fate it seems was working against us.

Club Fees

That dreaded phrase! Club Fees! What's all this about? I thought Linux was free?

 

Unfortunately, the reality of the situation is that we have to pay for the use of the room where we meet. All in all, we need to find around £324 per year to hold the meetings. In our meeting in January 2009 we voted to move out of our previous location at the dive club, to our new facilities at St John Centre in the Centre of Mansfield. For this we have a warm, good sized room in a central location with good parking, free internet access and tea and coffee making facilities. The room is ideal for holding installs, discussion, tech-help and we have the facility to hold training sessions with a projector.

What I did on my Thursday off

Well I fired up my Ubuntu laptop, and checked the update manager.It said that a new distro was available, so I thought..hmm looks nice, but I don't trust my wireless network so i stuck a network cable in the slot and started up the upgrade, It told me it would take an hour or so to download the new files.

What's our favourite distribution?

?First of all, let me state that there is no official Mansfield LUG distro. You can use any distro that you like and we'll gladly help out. Just because 80% of us use one distribution doesn't mean you have to use the same distribution just to fit in.
